What the Jeremy Vine Show Taught Me.

See that? That's my Jeremy Vine autobiography signed by the radio marvel himself.

Starstruck? Yes. Inspired? Completely.

The day after attending the SRA awards, I visited BBC Radio 2 to sit in on the Jeremy Vine show.

I know I'm not quite the target audience for Radio 2 but I am a massive fan of the show. The daily two hours covers all sorts of news topics with listener input, which is presented so well. Definitely something for hopeful broadcast journalists, like myself, to learn from.

I love reading the blog of Vine's producer, Tim Johns. I especially like Tim's story- starting on student radio to processing to Radio 2. He also creates some great radio packages.

Surprised that Tim followed me back on twitter, I decided to direct message him earlier this year asking him for advice about running a student radio station. He replied with some really great tips and pointers, which I have put into fruition with Shock.

I bit the bullet and sent him an email asking if I could come in for the day. He then gave me editor Phil's email address. And before I knew, I had 'Radio 2' written in my diary.

I arrived almost an hour earlier than I needed to. I took opportunity to sit in the cafe outside the Broadcasting House and absorb the bustle before heading around the corner.

It felt so surreal being there. As I sat outside the studio, waiting to meet Phil with the guests of the show, who comes up behind me? Steve Wright. It felt very strange seeing the faces of the voices I listen to on a daily basis in real life.

I was introduced to Jeremy then I sat in the corner of radio control room observing the presenter through the huge glass window whilst he interviewed guests, read out tweets and discussed the news stories of that day.

2 hours went so quickly! The show covered a range of topics including the death of Leonard Cohen, car seat safety for babies and the last walk of a sick dog on a beach in Cornwall.

It had been a long week for him- with the US Elections being on the previous Tuesday of that week, that Jeremy covered overnight. His two weeks off after that show was definitely well deserved.

Before he left, I asked if he could sign my book. He genuinely seemed so touched that I had read it and made the effort to come in and ask him to sign it. He wrote:

" Perfect! [referring to the "For Rachel" dedication already printed on the inside cover written for his wife]. Thanks Rachel for coming in and especially for reading this... Jeremy Vine."

Much to my mum's shock, I didn't get a picture with him. I felt like the signing of my book was enough and didn't really need a selfie.

Even though I was only there for a few hours, I learnt so much from the experience and would absolutely love to go back.
